Electrically conductive materials are particularly sought after to respond to the massive electrification of household and industrial devices. Copper, for example, is present in almost all components of the electrical system (nuclear and renewables, batteries, networks, etc.). However, its use faces certain limits and alternative non-metallic conductive materials are necessary. The material that we are developing could therefore be an alternative to the use of copper for certain applications such as plastronics, flexible and/or organic electronics.

With this project, we melt-processed an electrically conductive thermoplastic composite using an intrinsically conductive polymer, PEDOT. The latter being infusible, we have developed a new method to implement this polymer via extrusion processes. The resulting conductive thermoplastic composite currently exhibits higher conductivities than commercially available filaments for additive manufacturing.

This project was presented at SATT Conectus as part of the “Mature Your PhD” competition and is one of the 2023 winners.
